FEB 14

FEB 14
As some famous Soviet writer and dissident explained:
Holes in the ground absorb the pains of the pained,
Powerful as a Naypyitaw liquor which gets us pissed
Maddening our brainwaves with a carbon monoxide mist.
Senior citizens in love with starlets and supermodels
Generally are more broken-hearted and troubled
Than the one who's in love with the many, young and
Swaying and laughing and clapping with hands of

Translated by Naill McDevitt

(This poem is coded to spell out ASSHOLE POWER MAD
SENIOR GENERAL THAN SWAY- Shwe in Burmese language)

1) The Russian writer referred to is Ilya Ehrenberg whose novel THE FALL OF
PARIS was translated into Burmese by Mya Than Tint.
2) Naypyitaw is the artificially created capital deep in the interior where Than
Shwe hides out.
3) I interpret the old man in the poem to be Than Shwe himself, a 74-year-old
who probably has his pick of glamourous Burmese women.
4) My final two lines present an image of a Buddhist monk whose love is much
more universal and real and humane than that of the demoralised and dying
old general.
